John on writing music for TV

I’ve been writing a lot of TV music the past several years and have found you can slap different styles of music on top of each other as long as it helps tell the story.

That’s what I love about underscore, anything goes.

It’s meant to serve something bigger than itself. It becomes a cocktail or a recipe that you change a small amount every time you cook… You have your basic ingredients.. your base so to speak .. then you start adding flavors together that may or may not have been added together before and before you know it you’ve got something brand new.

Of course, every now and then, this process backfires and you’re back to an empty pot. But this is what keeps composing music so interesting to me.

I still think there is a lot of magic in trying something else for the first time. You’re just going by pure inspiration and instinct.

Your brain hasn’t quite caught up with telling you, you don’t know what you’re doing!
