Bob Bradley’s opening bass riff to Sugababes’ smash 'Red Dress' proves that this is a man who knows how to write a hook. “Whether you’re writing for a pop group or the telly, the rules are the same,” he says, “keep it simple, keep it vibey and give them a hook they can’t forget”.

Bob is underselling himself – he also knows how to make the track SOUND great. The quintessence of the polymath music producer, Bob plays like a demon, writes with inspiration and has the technical, electronic and production skills of a techno-geek, but lets the creativity, not technical wizardry rule.

“Bob’s tracks are immediately accessible,” says Audio Network Creative Director Andrew Sunnucks, “they always have a central idea which just sounds unusual and different – it might be in the groove or in the top line or the harmonic progression, but with every track it’s always there somewhere.”
 
Clearly Bob is extremely successful at this. From the age of 16 he has worked with indie bands, was signed to V2/BMG as a fresh faced 21 year old and went on to co-produce and write for the Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Natalie Imbruglia, and Gabriella Cilmi.The popularity of his work ‘A Cuckoo’ led it to become the soundtrack for o2’s 2008 television and cinema campaign. He was also honoured last year by the Royal Television Society for his work on the four part series ‘The Cosmos: A Beginner’s Guide’. He has another nomination this year.
 
Bob has always combined his pop career with media music, but only recently has he joined the Audio Network team as a very regular writer. “I did a few tracks for Audio Network some years ago, took a long break from it, and then, suddenly all these royalties started coming through,” he remembers. “I would be a liar if I didn’t admit that it re-inspired me to get stuck in!”

Since then, Bob has been one of the most prolific and popular writers the company has. His commercial ear keeps the production and sound well away from ordinary production music and his songs have also become firm favorites in the Audio Network download charts.

So what now? "I have committed to doing a bunch of stuff for Audio Network over the years to come,” he says. “They're such a lovely bunch of people to work for –  very passionate but also very trusting in their composers’ artistic integrity. I already have some super exciting collaborations in the pipeline that Mr Sunnucks has hooked up. Stuff that could break some ground!"

Q&A

 

What was your most embarrassing faux pas? I had to force a famous unnamed rock god’s limo to pull over on the motorway so I could take a leak. Wooops!
What is your greatest/favourite claim to fame?  I played guitar on Roy Chubby Brown’s ‘the helmet rides again’.
Which album do you air guitar/drum/keyboard to? I have to be honest and say Dire Straights Alchemy Live was probably the first but by the time my teenage angst kicked in.. Back in Black and Sonic Youth’s Dirty. These days, I mix air drumming with air guitar to Houses of the Holy.
Any musical guilty pleasures? I played in a band called ‘the s**theads’ that have recently been re-formed under the more P.C. name of ‘Trail of tears’. That says it all! 
Who would play you in a movie? Willo the wisp.
Which composer or band would you bring back from the dead? Buddy Holly.
What is your greatest extravagance? Jasmine Pearls from Jing Tea & Thierry Mugler scents.
Any words of wisdom you would like to offer or have received? Don’t put off for tomorrow what can be done today.
Any hidden talents? I know a fair few PI digits. Or the speed of Light?

Your top 5 musical works of all time or today are? Buddy Holly–Moondreams, the Beach Boys – Warmth of the Sun, the Everly Brothers – Don’t blame me, the Chordettes – Mr.Sandman, the Beatles - Yesterday.
What's behind you? Bloody Mary.
If you could be reincarnated, who would you come back as? A kid in the 50s. Witness the birth of Rock n Roll. Alternatively, an alien.
Have you ever been on Top of The Pops? Not that I can recall.
What inspires you? Life.
If you weren't writing music for a living what would you be doing?  
Something weird.
Do you ever hear a complete piece of music in your head before writing it/ recording it? Yes, quite a few times. I won’t go into it though cos you won’t believe me.
Do you download or buy music on CD? Downloads mainly. I do sometimes have a blowout in HMV. Usually at Christmas for family and friends.
Other than family, what one thing would you rescue if your house was on fire? My dog Eddie although I’d struggle if I’d have to carry him. He’s a unit!  Also.. My stash of backup drives.
What question have you always wanted someone to ask you, and what would be your answer? Free ride to the Moon? Ohh.. Go on then.

Public performance of the finished production on a web site or at a live event will require an additional public performance licence from the relevant collection society in your territory. However, public performance on user-generated content sites such as YouTube should already be covered by the site owner’s licence.
