[Disclaimer: this blog post is a bit nerdy] When I tell people what I do for a living, often the first thing they ask me (or the second thing, after: ‘Really? That’s a job?’) is ‘why are the adverts on TV so loud?’ I explain that I’m not really responsible for that, but that it’s something to do with advertisers wanting to grab your attention, and a lack of coherent legislation on volume normalisation across broadcast audio. And that’s usually the ...

Take a tech based keyboard player with an unhealthy interest in ocsillators and the latest ground breaking software, mix with an organic lo tech musician who likes to get people excited with what ever noise they can extract from antique technology like the guitar, tabla or oud for instance - it could go one of two ways…. Purity We can all appreciate the purity of a focused creation. A Chopin nocturne is perfect – or is it? That statement alone could provoke someone ...

The Audio Network family of composers are incredibly focused on their creative vision but on the whole, remarkably open to the rewarding but potentially risky business of collaboration. I recently worked with fellow Audio Network Composer, Lincoln Grounds on our latest album, Classic Quirky Characters Lincoln and I set out to do something that we both have a massive passion for which is early French swing but it soon expanded into our fascination with what is it that makes quirky, jazzy ...

I have written music in lots of styles for Audio Network over the years and over time I have become known for my electronic tracks and in particular my Indie production music . Indie as far as the catalogue goes, describes guitar based music that has energy in its delivery, full of youthful attitude and extremely melodic. It straddles the line between pop music and hard rock. It is never too polished and has a cool swagger. Indie Inspiration I come from a background of playing in bands and ...

Audio Network & Daytona Lights Video Shoot On a recent cold Saturday, upcoming band Daytona Lights were shooting their debut music video in the country - and Audio Network were along for the ride. This Modern Landscape The track is ‘My Place’ from the Daytona Lights debut album ‘ This Modern Landscape ’. As manager of Creative Services in the New York office, I spend the majority of my time listening to music. Whether it’s sourcing tracks for our clients’ television series, films, ads and games, discussing new pieces with our composers, or scouring Soundcloud for fresh and innovative tunes, my ears are usually locked to my headphones. One of the most exciting elements of working in this industry is that music is constantly evolving, and now that musicians have more outlets ...

Chris Egan has just finished recording a Cinematic Blockbuster Movie Extravaganza with the full Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (all ninety of them) at Abbey Road Studio One. Audio Network talks to the man behind the music to find out how he does such a thing… What inspired you to create this type of score? The inspiration is drawn from the wonderful old-school ‘Popcorn Movies’ that I’ve watched since I was a child. I’ve always written from a media composer point ...

What does a Composer do in the lead up to a huge recording with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Abbey Road Studio 1 ? Drinking lots of Red Bull, staying up all night and finessing hundreds of pages of score… Audio Network chats to Chris Egan . What does recording at Abbey Road Studio 1 mean to you? It’s the best sounding orchestral room in the world. It’s as simple as that. There aren’t many studios in the world that can hold a full Symphony Orchestra and a full Symphonic ...

Trip Hop changed my life more than any other music style. It was the movement of my generation. Down tempo ultra cool beats fused with classic old samples, sparse female vocals and lush string arrangements. It all kicked off with Bristol's 'Wild Bunch' (otherwise known as Massive Attack) and their first record 'Blue Lines'. But it was their follow up 'Protection' that got me hooked and mildly obsessed. Shortly after, Tricky (kid) left Massive Attack and released his very own debut Maxinquaye, which ...

Synaesthesia – how does music affect our senses? How can a certain chord or song make us see a certain colour or conjure up a particular image? Audio Network explored these questions with an ‘Evening of Music and Pictures’ at the Soho Hotel last week along with a room full of TV producers, creative directors and music experts. First up was Ruth Dockwray, Muscologist and Lecturer in Popular Music at Southampton University. Ruth explores 'the sound box' - in this case how we hear ...
